Simple Ways To Have Fun Outdoors

‌It’s that time of the year again when the outdoors beckon. Spending time outdoors is beneficial for all ages. It gives us that much-needed vitamin D, helps us stay active and lessens the risk of depression. Just making the trip to go for a regular walk can do wonders for your health. And if you live in one of the retirement villages on the Mornington Peninsula, the opportunities for some outdoor fun are practically endless.

Whether you’re a resident or a relative, here are some summer activities you can try.

    1. Picnics at a local park

Picnics are a great excuse to get back to nature, enjoy great food and catch up with friends and family. Young children will enjoy this activity as well. You can even squeeze in some mild exercises such as walking around or jogging.

    2. Gardening

Gardening usually takes a backseat during the cold winter months but once summer is around, you can get back to your gardening routine and plant flowers or vegetables for fresh produce. There’s nothing quite like seeing the fruits of your labour–literally. Village Glen residents enjoy a vegetable garden complete with a greenhouse all year long.

    3. Swimming

What’s summer without swimming? Not only is swimming fun, but it’s also a great exercise that helps maintain a healthy weight, preserves muscle mass and builds strength. Village Glen residents enjoy water aerobics in our indoor pool but also the numerous beaches on the Mornington Peninsula.

    4. Fishing

Whether on a pier, fishing boat, or from the shore, fishing is a relaxing summer outdoor activity both you and your grandchildren can enjoy. If you’ve never fished before, bring someone along who knows how to and have them guide you. Don’t forget to bring some picnic gear too, just in case you get a fresh catch!

    5. Sports or games

With warm temperatures, it only makes sense to enjoy your favourite sports or outdoor games. Bowls, croquet, or golf are just some great ideas to stay active and socialise with other people. With facilities including competition-standard bowling greens and croquet rinks, Village Glen offers residents a wide range of activities and sports to enjoy during summer. We also have circuit training in our gym and yoga classes in the sports building!

    6. Farmer’s market

Summer is the time for outdoor markets. You can browse for fresh fruits and veggies from the farmer’s market or scour for unique craft supplies. Mornington Peninsula, in particular, has outdoor markets all year round that Village Glen residents can enjoy.

Whatever you decide to do, all these summer outdoor activities can physically and mentally uplifting!
